For You & Childen - Grand Children's Futures: Dow 13,000 now; 116,200 by 2046

Dow 13,000 now; 116,200 by 2046
BOSTON (MarketWatch) — My favorite market forecast of all time came in the fall of 1995, when mutual fund pioneer Bill Berger came to Boston and predicted the Dow Jones Industrial Average would rise to 116,200.

Wall of Worry Investing

But this is the hand we have been dealt, so we might as well make the most of it. Scratch that - we might as well get even.
Here are five things you can do right now:
   1. Buy stocks with characteristics like bonds: Right now the best examples include Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs), particularly those that are energy related. Not only are many of them poised to profit from rising oil prices, but the high, stable income stream many of them pay lends stability in volatile markets. The same is true of many food, water and technology companies.
   2. Keep bond duration short: Stick to shorter-term maturities with duration under five years if you're buying bonds directly. If you own bond funds or ETFs, check to see that the duration is on the shorter end of the spectrum. When interest rates ultimately rise, shorter duration holdings will shield your money from potentially catastrophic drops as longer bonds take an epic gut shot.
   3. Stick to "glocals" with fortress-like balance sheets: The idea here is very simple -diversify your holdings and future growth away from U.S. and EU legacy debt that will hobble the established markets for years to come. What you are looking for is companies serving the "rising billion." That's the group formerly known as the "bottom billion," or the poorest of the poor who are finally engaged in global growth. Think India, China, Malaysia and Vietnam here. Even the Middle East will fit the bill in a few years.
   4. Buy metals and commodities: It's not too late. "Everybody" expects these to go down; that's usually a bullish influence under normal circumstances, but even more so as paper currencies fail. And make no mistake about it, paper money is failing.
   5. Prepare for an age of abundance: I've said it before and I'll say it again - the greatest wealth is always created from the ashes of chaos. This time will be no different. If you are not in the game you'll miss 100% of the investment opportunities the current financial crisis creates.

The Fed's War on Capitalism

Here's how I see things. The "Whitewash Ministry" has basically five options:
   1. Repression
   2. Devaluation
   3. Austerity
   4. Deflation
   5. Inflation

What It Takes to Become a Millionaire

The idea of becoming a millionaire may seem like a pipe dream.
When it comes to retirement, most Americans doubt they've saved or invested enough to retire comfortably, let alone reach that million-dollar milestone. A new AP-CNBC poll finds nearly one-third (31 percent) of U.S. residents believe they would need a minimum savings of $100,000 to $500,000 if retiring this year in order to be confident of living comfortably in retirement, and 22 percent believe the minimum is $1 million or more to retire comfortably.

Market Setting Up For Pre-Fed Meeting Rally And Post-Fed Meeting Decline
Financial markets have fully absorbed most of the hits that I have expected would come its way in September. For this reason, global equity markets may exhibit a positive technical bias in the context of a “relief rally” between now and the next Fed meeting on September 20-21. For this reason I expect to have closed out all bearish positions before the close today.

The Looming Bear Market: What You Can do That Washington Can't and Wall Street Won't
I just finished a battery of media appearances on Fox Business, Bloomberg, BNN and CNBC Asia, and without exception I was asked about two things: President Barack Obama's jobs bill and the U.S. Federal Reserve's "QE3."

What Wall Street doesn’t want us to know about oil prices
The top six financial institutions in this country own assets equal to more than 60 percent of our gross domestic product and possess enormous economic and political power. One of the great questions of our time is whether the American people, through Congress, will control the greed, recklessness and illegal behavior on Wall Street, or whether Wall Street will continue to wreak havoc on our economy and the lives of working families.

The Myth Of Diversification

SmartStops recently found this article based on a study which shows some of the fallacy that diversification from modern portfolio theory , MPT, is the only way to manage risk and thus lead to higher returns. Their definition of risk for this study did use the standard deviation from mpt. Our hope is that the industry realizes that even that computational methodology is lacking the sophisticated approach that smartstops optimization engine wa built upon.   You can read some of our own studies here.

The Seven Steadfast Laws of Investing

In this missive I present a set of principles that have always guided sensible investment that, together, form what I call The Seven Immutable Laws of Investing. [Incidentally, immutable means "not subject or susceptible to change or variation in form or quality or nature."]  I hope they help you to avoid some of the worst mistakes, which, when made, tend to lead investors down the path of the permanent impairment of capital. Right now, I believe the laws argue for caution. [Let me explain.] Words: 3023

Long-Term Investing Strategies: The Final Four Ways to Invest in Global Demographic Trends

Stock-market icon Warren Buffett once said that "our favorite holding period is forever."

Clearly, if you want to be a stock-market winner, you need to find profit opportunities that offer a predictable, long-term payoff. And one of the best ways to do that is to capitalize on global demographic trends.

Five Keys for Traders to Deal with Market Fear

How comfortable are you dealing with uncertainty?

As volatility and uncertainty increases, so does fear. When our emotions run high, then our decision making process suffers. It seems like the harder we try, the worse things get. We start reacting to things instead of being proactive. Then we feel overwhelmed.

Does this sound familiar?
One of the hardest things to deal with is uncertainly.

We have strategies for managing our risk in most aspects of our trading. However, we seldom talk about or have strategies for the most crucial element, our Personal Risk.Have you noticed the panic that is going on in the markets? Do you know people who have been a contributor to it? Do you know them intimately?

How do you manage your Personal Risk?
1. Trade With a Clear Mind

Do not make emotional decisions. Realize that emotions are emotions. What differentiates the successful traders from others is how we recalibrate our reactions to our emotions. I was watching an interview with a surfer. The interviewer asked him what he does when a big surf comes and he goes underwater. The surfer said it was simple. “If I panic, I only have 3-5 seconds of air to breathe. If I stay calm, I have 45-60 seconds of air.” What does surfing have to do with trading? If you panic and operate from a place of fear, you could lose all of your capital. However, if you take a moment and think about your strategies, you can have much better results.

2. Look at Your Portfolio Objectively
Think about your portfolio as if you are looking at the portfolio of your best friend. How would you advise him/her?

3. Limit Your Input
There are a lot of conflicting points of view. If we want to listen to all of them, it becomes very confusing, and the confused mind does not make a decision. Instead of listening to everybody, pick the top 3 people that you respect and listen to them. This way, you can remain focused and have much better trading results.

4. Be In Tune With the Markets
Trade the markets as they are and not as you want them to be. If we are not in tune with the markets and don’t listen to them, we are going to be in a losing game. After all, hope is a lousy hedge.

5. Be In a Supportive Environment
It is important to listen to the people that we respect and are successful. There are traders whose spouse and/or friends have little or no risk tolerance. As a result, these traders allow the fear of their spouse and/or friends to become the boundaries of their success.

Who are you choosing to surround yourself with?
Remember, not the most talented or skilled person wins the game. The game is won by the ones who can manage their Personal Risk and have a Mental Edge.
Here is to making success your habit™,

Global Investing Strategies: A "Lightning-Round" Look at U.S. Stocks, the Dollar, Inflation and China

If you're a regular Money Morning reader, then you know that, d uring my appearances on national television or when I'm doing media interviews around the world, I frequently participate in something called a "lightning round " - a rapid-fire interview technique in which the announcer (and sometimes even audience members) run through a list of questions in rapid-fire order.

It's a technique that really puts you on the proverbial "hot seat." But I actually enjoy it: It forces you to think on your feet - which appeals to the former trader in me - and allows you to run through a bunch of topics in a very short stretch. In one way or another, each of these topics deals with global investing strategies.

I thought you might enjoy - and perhaps even find useful - a "highlight reel" of some of the best lightning-round questions that I've received in recent weeks, both in front of the camera and during the informal discussions that follow the presentations and broadcasts.

And we'll start with the topic that seems to be one of the most popular global investing strategies topics right now - gold.

Stocks, Dollar, Buffett & Tiger: Kass' 20 Predictions for 2010

By: JeeYeon Park CNBC News Associate
Year-end is high season for market and economic outlooks. Douglas Kass, founder and president of Seabreeze Partners Management shared his 20 predictions for 2010 with CNBC on Monday.

1. Corporate profits soar 100% in the first quarter of 2010 from a year ago, while GDP jumps 4.5%.

2. Housing and jobs fail to revive.
“Modest gains in jobs,” Kass told CNBC in a live interview. “Real rates will ratchet higher. We’re starting to see it. It’s one of those due bills from the nation whose deficit is growing in a spectacular fashion.”

3. The U.S. dollar explodes higher.

4. The price of gold topples.

“Gold is going to break $900," he said. "It’s one of the most crowded trades.”

5. Central banks tighten earlier than expected.
"We might see a policy mistake—everyone’s concerned about it," he said. "I think we’ll follow China. China’s already trying to stem the property speculation…So one of the surprises will be a much earlier increase in the Fed funds rates than generally expected.

6. A Middle East peace is upended due to an attack by Israel on Iran.
“What will cause a correction is something that no one’s thinking about. And when I distill all the possible uncertainties that will break the disequilibrium, geopolitical is uppermost in my mind,” he said.

7. Stocks drop by 10% in the first half of next year.
“If we look at the consensus forecast, they’re really clustered in a narrow range," said Kass. "We get a decline and the first surprise is that corporate profits double in the first quarter and then you have an exogenous event, which hurts the market and then we get nothing for the second half of the year.”

8. Goldman Sachs goes private.
Predictions '10 - See Complete Coverage
“With Warren Buffett assisting," he said. Kass predicts that Goldman Sachs [GS 164.948 0.978 (+0.6%) ] stock will drop back to $125 to $130 a share, within $15 of the warrant exercise price that Warren Buffett received in Berkshire Hathaway's [BRK.A 98690.00 -205.00 (-0.21%) ] late 2008 investment in Goldman Sachs.

9. Second-half 2010 GDP growth turns flat.

10. Rate-sensitive stocks outperform; metals underperform.

11. Treasury yields fall.
“They will peak in the first quarter—4-4.25—not much more than they are now," he said. "And they drop with slowing growth.”

12. Warren Buffett steps down.
“With the Burlington Northern [BNI 98.50 0.10 (+0.1%) ] acquisition, the Oracle has completed his canvas and there is very little for him to do," said Kass. "And he steps down, and as you know he’s been testing out some outside managers as his CIO.”

13. Insider trading charges expand.
14. The SEC launches an assault on mutual fund expenses.
Kass predicts that the SEC restricts 12b-1 mutual fund fees and in response to the proposal, asset management stocks crater.

15. The SEC restricts short-selling.
"All short-selling," he said. "We get a double dip in the economy—stocks start moving lower, and they panic."

16. More hedge fund tumult emerges.
17. Pandit is out and Cohen is in at Citigroup.
"Pandit will be out—he's doing a horrible job—he's slow to react to the demise of the credit markets and my surprise is [former Shearson Lehman Brothers Chairman] Peter Cohen replaces him." Kass also predicts that Sandy Weill rejoins Citigroup [C 3.34 -0.01 (-0.3%) ] as a senior consultant.

Predictions '10 - See Complete Coverage

18. A weakened Republican party is in disarray.
Sarah Palin announces that she has separated from her husband, leaving the Republican party firmly in the hands of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, said Kass. An improving economy in early 2010 elevates President Obama's popularity back to pre-inauguration levels, and, despite the market's second-quarter decline, the country comes together after the Middle East conflict, producing a tidal wave of populism that moves ever more dramatically in legislation and spirit.

19. Tiger Woods makes a comeback.
Tiger Woods and his wife reconcile in early 2010, and he will return earlier than expected to the PGA Tour, predicts Kass. After announcing that his wife is pregnant with their third child, both the PGA Tour's and Tiger Woods' popularity rise to record levels, and the golfer signs a series of new commercial contracts that insure him a record $150 million of endorsement income in 2011, he added.

20. The New York Yankees are sold to a Jack Welch-led investor group.
The Steinbrenner family decides, for estate purposes, to sell the New York Yankees to a group headed by former General Electric [GE 15.33 -0.11 (-0.71%) ] Chairman Jack Welch.

Market Tips: No Big Correction in 2010

By: CNBC.com
Global stock markets saw strong gains in 2009, recovering a large chunk of the losses suffered by investors in the wake of the financial crisis. But will 2010 bring investors more rewards or does it hold the risk of a major correction? Arjuna Mahendran, MD & head of investment strategy, Asia at HSBC Private Bank, told CNBC that he does not expect a correction next year, as long as corporate earnings get off to a strong start.

Don't Expect a Big Correction in 2010

"I don't think there is a big correction coming. If we do have a correction there's an outside chance you could have something like 15-20 percent correction. That's if we have some extraordinarily disappointing numbers in the first-quarter earning season," Mahendran said.

Dollar Likely to Rally in 2010

The dollar is likely to rally throughout 2010, according to Thio Chin Loo, senior currency strategist at BNP Paribas. She explains why to CNBC.

China's Need for Speed
Demand for new cars in China will grow 8-10 percent in 2010, foresees John Zeng, China auto expert at IHS Global Insight. He gives CNBC his insight on China's auto market.

Lights, Camera, Credit!

The expansion of the movie industry in North Asia offers some investment opportunities in private credit, says Paul Heffner, CEO of Gen2 Partners.

Taiex Could Surpass 8,000 Points This Week
The Taiex could surpass 8,000 points this week, predicts Seow Hock Hin, senior VP of institutional sales at MF Global.

Future of the Vietnamese Dong
Alvin Liew, economist, South East Asia at Standard Chartered Bank, expects the Vietnamese government to keep the dong weak for the rest of 2010.

Expect Growth in Indonesia to Pick Up
The pace of economic growth in Indonesia will pick up next year, believes Alvin Liew, economist, South East Asia at Standard Chartered Bank.

Weak Yuan Poses Problems for China
The Chinese government will face a very challenging environment next year because of the value of the yuan, says Lan Xue, head of China research at Citi Investment Research.

Predictions 2010: Markets & Economy

Oliver Quillia for CNBC.com
Everyone else is throwing darts at the future, but can you honestly think of even a half dozen prognosticators that have been totally right in the last two years? Maybe the gloom and doom crowd were scoring big early on, but many of them missed the stock market rally.

So here goes 2010:
1. Economy.
Economists say unemployment should peak in the first part of the year, somewhere just shy of 11 percent. What I hope is that the hiring is not just from short-lived stimulus spending, and that companies actually see the benefit of adding to their payrolls as soon as Q1.

2. Trouble ahead.
We all know there are more catalysts for crisis out there, whether its commercial real estate or some country debt. I hope the Fed has it right, and it is keeping rates low to heal the system, not just firing up another recipe for future disasters.

3. Double Dip.
It's possible there could be a double dip recession, sooner or later, so let's hope
that's wrong. The frailty of the recovery depends so much on confidence. Businesses have to realize there may be opportunities now if they open their check books. They can go along way to help consumers come out of their shells......etc

China Is Risking Japan 1980s-Style Bubble, BNP Says

(Bloomberg) -- China is risking a Japan-style bubble unless the country’s regulators start to rein a record lending boom, BNP Paribas said. “We’re entering a phase where China could experience similar asset bubble that we saw in Japan in the 1980s,” said Erwin Sanft, head of China and Hong Kong equities research at BNP Paribas. “If China continues its loose fiscal and monetary policy that could be those problems.”China implemented a stimulus package, cut interest rates five times since September 2008 and encouraged $1.3 trillion of lending to boost domestic spending as the global recession curbed demand for the country’s exports. The credit expansion helped the Shanghai Composite Index rally 83 percent this year and home prices in 70 major cities climb at the fastest pace in 14 months in October.

Doug Hirschhorn: Greed...or Fear

Market coach Doug Hirschhorn, PhD, discusses what it is that really motivates traders on Wall Street
Today I'm here to tell you the age-old belief that greed moves the markets is just plain wrong. There is only one thing that moves the market: fear. Whether it’s a fear of losing money or a fear of missing out on making money, the simple fact is that fear is the main driver for traders.

Here are 3 ways to move beyond your fear:
* Get over yourself As a trader, you need to accept the reality that you are always missing out on some trade somewhere. The markets were here long before you began trading and will be here long after you’ve retired to your quiet little island getaway.
* Know your strengths Instead of chasing current hot markets (commodities) or styles (technicals) know what your competitive advantage is and stick to it.
* Know your job Contrary to popular opinion, a trader's job is not to make money. That’s the market’s job.

Rather, your job is to do the following:
* Figure out your competitive advantage.
* Execute that advantage when it appears.
* Manage risk as the market moves.

Do your job and you won’t have to worry about chasing the market because you're afraid to miss out.Think better, invest smarter.

Global Asset-Bubble Concerns are ‘Premature,’ Fitch Advises

(Bloomberg) -- Concern that global prices of shares and property have risen to unsustainable levels is “premature” and spare production capacity will help contain inflation, said David Riley, head of global sovereign ratings at Fitch Ratings. The Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England last week moved to unwind some of the emergency steps they took to rescue the world economy from its sharpest slump since the Great Depression. U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling said Nov. 6 the Group of 20 nations should develop a way to tackle asset-price bubbles as the world’s leading economies recover.
