9:18 AM 8/12 Stocks surged sharply across the board Thursday, with the S&P and Nasdaq wiping out the previous session's losses, as investors snapped up beaten-down sectors. Despite the day's rally, the Dow and S&P are still down more than 2 percent for the week. The blue-chip has alternated between sharp gains and losses over the past eight days and has logged its fourth straight closing change of over 400 points for the first time. Volume was heavy again with the consolidated tape of the NYSE at 6.81 billion shares, while 1.88 billion shares changed hands on the floor. European shares ended higher following news that French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet next Tuesday to discuss the euro zone governance and other international issues.
