[Dow Jones] Indonesian shares are likely to fall, weighed by losses in most Asian markets and a weaker IDR, traders say. They expect the main index to find support at 3650 after it ended up 1.8% Wednesday at 3685.306. "Overall, I expect the market to consolidate in a very tight range amid continuing global economic uncertainty," says a fund manager at a local asset management company. Bank Mandiri (BMRI.JK) and automaker Astra (ASII.JK) may lead the market's decline on profit-taking after their recent gains.

Cement   [  PDF  ]Yes, it's a rebound - but is it sustainable?NEUTRAL - Maintained- by Lydia TOISUTAStrong growth in 9M11 cement sales volume, partly due to low base effects, provides a small boost, but it does not remove longer-term concerns over weaker margins and profit growth. We believe investors will do better to wait a while for more attractive valuations. Valuations have turned a little too rich for our liking after the cement sector outpaced the index last week. While we still like the sector’s exposure to the growing middle class and infrastructure projects, it lacks near-term catalysts; NEUTRAL kept. Top picks are Holcim, Indocement.

[Dow Jones] The HSI is down 1.5% at 18,029.06, tracking the decline on Wall Street Wednesday, and as investor sentiment flip-flops regarding the outcome of this weekend's EU summit, billed as critical to stemming Europe's debt crisis. "There is still high level of uncertainty regarding the outcomes of European debt crisis," says Haitong International. 41 of 46 blue chips are lower in another session of macro-driven and indiscriminate selloff; those falling more than 4.0% include Esprit (0330.HK), Li & Fung (0494.HK), Chalco (2600.HK) and China Life (2628.HK). China Unicom (0762.HK) bucks trend to rise 0.3% at HK$15.46 due to its strong 3G subscriber take-up in September. Market volume is modest HK$7.99 billion; any index support from 18,000 is likely only psychological. (robert.li@dowjones.com)

[Dow Jones] Singapore shares have weak offshore cues and could open lower after Wall Street's weak session and as regional markets open in the red; negative factors remain Europe, where reports suggest leaders are still at loggerheads over the EFSF and the U.S., where the Fed's beige book has sparked increased worries over the U.S. economy. On Wednesday, the benchmark STI closed down 0.2% at 2720.21, its second straight session of falls. Analysts tip 2680 as support for the STI with any upside likely to be capped at 2790. Property stocks may be in focus after the government Wednesday said it continues to monitor the domestic real estate market closely, and will take more measures to temper high housing costs if needed, as current low global interest rates are likely to keep property demand high; within the sector, Keppel Land (K17.SG) may draw interest after its 3Q net profit rose 6.6% on year to S$58 million, helped by higher contributions from its property investment and trading businesses, and changes in accounting policy.

Dow Jones] The Nikkei is down 0.6% at 8719.40 following the DJIA's overnight slide after a gloomy assessment of the U.S. economy from the Federal Reserve, while investors await further developments in the European debt crisis, says Yumi Nishimura, senior market analyst at Daiwa Securities. U.S. corporate earnings results have thus far "not shown a major negative surprise that could pull the market sharply lower," she says, while adding, "It's hard to find a direction." The index's near-term downside is tipped at 8650. 30 of 33 Topix subindexes are lower, led by major exporters such as Fanuc (6954.TO), down 1.6% at Y11,970, and Honda Motor (7267.TO), down 1.6% at Y2,336. Thai flooding-affected Nikon (7731.TO) is down 2.3% at Y1,677, and TDK (6762.TO) is off 3.5% at Y2,721. NEC (6701.TO) is up 1.8% at Y171 on a Nikkei report of a brighter-than-expected group operating profit. Embattled Olympus (7733.TO) is up 1.5% at Y1,410 after dropping 44% over the prior four sessions. (kosaku.narioka@dowjones.com)

[Dow Jones] Spot gold comes under pressure with prices falling 0.9% in early Asia trade amid weaker regional stock markets and selloffs in base metals. An elusive resolution to the euro-zone's debt crisis weighs on market sentiment ahead of a much-anticipated weekend meeting of the region's policymakers. "Every day that goes by without resolving the issue of too much debt in the global financial system, is a day closer to financial contagion," says bullion dealer GoldCore. Meanwhile, some banks have cut their precious metals forecasts for 2011 and 2012 citing significant deterioration in the economic environment and a sharp spike in the level of uncertainty. Spot gold falls to $1,627.50, the lowest in the session so far; it is now at $1,630/oz, down $12.70 from its previous close. (arpan.mukherjee@dowjones.com)

[Dow Jones] The Kospi quickly recovers from an early 0.2% decline to be last up 0.6% at 1866.29, with recently outperforming carmakers leading the way. Local institutions are net buying KRW36.8 billion worth of shares, while foreigners are net selling KRW4.7 billion worth. Investors are now somewhat immune to significantly negative news, and "losses in the U.S. markets (overnight) were not a response to more such news, but due to ongoing worries over the eurozone crisis," says Woori Investment & Securities analyst Lee Kyoung-min; more stable moves in the USD/KRW following news Wednesday that Korea agreed with Japan to expand their bilateral currency swap agreement to $70 billion from $13 billion are also a positive, adds Lee, tipping a 1830-1870 band for the rest of the session. Kia Motors (000270.SE) is +1.5% at KRW75,100 on earnings expectations, while Hana Financial (086790.SE) is down 2.5% at KRW36,650 following robust gains of late and amid mounting pressures on its global peers to recapitalize.

[Dow Jones] Nymex crude is up slightly in extremely thin electronic trading after a 2.5% drop Wednesday. Crude will likely to remain around its current levels in Asia today, as negative factors such as the Fed's bleak economic outlook and the recent downgrades of some European sovereign debt ratings have already been factored in, says broker Yutaka Shoji in its note. November Nymex crude, due expire later today, is up 29 cents at $86.40/bbl on Globex; December crude is 8 cents higher at $86.37/bbl. December ICE Brent is up 68 cents at $109.07/bbl. (mari.iwata@dowjones.com)

[Dow Jones] China shares are set to keep consolidating amid worries over a slowing economy. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index is likely to stay in a narrow 2350-2400 range after it ends down 0.3% at 2377.51 Wednesday. "Without sufficient fund inflows, the stock market will remain weak in the short term," says Shenyin Wanguo Securities analyst Qian Qimin. UBS Securities says "in addition to the continued focus on the European debt crisis and the dimmer global economic outlook, the slowdown in (China's) property sales and the meltdown of the Wenzhou underground lending market aroused renewed concerns about a hard landing and a blowout of systemic risks in the banking sector." The Shenzhen Composite Index fell 0.6% to 1004.20 Wednesday.

[Dow Jones] The EUR/USD falls as hedge funds and other investors who had bought the pair on earlier expectations for an augmentation of the EFSF possibly to around Y2 trillion, are now trimming those bets after European leaders Wednesday poured water on such speculation, and on cues from weak Asian share markets, a dealer at a Japanese bank in Singapore says. "This is a classic risk-off environment, with weaker equities and commodities also dragging on the risk-sensitive currencies like the euro," he says. "Players who had gone long recently are now scaling back those bets before the Sunday (European leaders) summit, as there's still so much uncertainty." The EUR/USD is at 1.3748, down from an earlier high of 1.3783. The dealer says if no more positive news emerges on the European bailout plans, the EUR/USD could head to around 1.3500 by the end of the week.
