[Dow Jones] The USD/IDR is lower at 8,950 vs 9,100 late Monday on suspected Bank Indonesia intervention; three dealers suspected Bank Indonesia to have sold $10 million at 8,950 to bring the pair below the psychologically important 9,000 mark. "But the dollar will likely to creep higher again later today as the market remains short on dollar supply," a dealer says. The pair will likely remain well bid today after foreigners Monday trimmed their holdings in Indonesian stocks and government bonds on renewed concerns over a global downturn. [Dow Jones] The HSI is likely to fall and set a fresh two-year low after sharp declines on Wall Street, amid fears Greece is slipping closer to a debt default that could rattle world financial markets, says Castor Pang, head of research at Core Pacific-Yamaichi. The index hit a two-year low at 16717 on Monday and Pang tips the index may fall to around 16,500. "I believe the market is still searching for a trough, as the overhang of the European debt issues will continue to weigh on trading sentiment across global equities markets." He believes China plays are likely to fall more in the near term, as worries over the credit crunch for small- and medium-sized enterprises in China's Wenzhou won't go away in the short term. The HSI ends down 4.4% at 16,822.15 Monday and the H-share index fell 5.7% to 8,408.26. (susanna.tai@dowjones.com)

[Dow Jones] Gold continues to trade over $1,580/oz, but there's a risk of prices moving toward $1,530/oz, says Barclays Capital based on technical analysis. The house adds the risk of moving lower is in line with the general commodity downturn. In early Asia, the yellow metal is slipping in and out of positive territory. Physical buying of gold in India and uncertainty in Europe could keep prices supported, traders and analysts say. The house notes it's bearish towards silver and the metal could look for a break below $29.10/oz, and then move toward $26.08/oz. Spot gold is at $1,659.65/oz, down $1.25, while silver is at $30.85/oz, up 36 cents from its previous close. (arpan.mukherjee@dowjones.com)

[Dow Jones] Copper could look for further downside towards $6,500/ton, then towards range lows of $6,041/ton, Barclays Capital says based on technical analysis. The red metal has fallen about 25% in September as investors slashed their global growth expectations, partly due to worse-than-expected readings on manufacturing data in key copper consuming economies such as China, Europe and the U.S. LME 3-month copper fell nearly 4.0% in the opening minutes of trade to touch $6,712/ton, its intraday low thus far. Some analysts expect trading in base metals to be volatile ahead of key events this week including the ECB and BoE interest rate announcements and U.S. non-farm payrolls. Barcap says aluminum is also under pressure; the house expects a move towards $2,091/ton initially and then towards $2,040/ton.
